Post-Abortion Syndrome

Post-abortion syndrome occurs after an abortion and can be experienced by both men and women. Symptoms are similar to those in any post-traumatic stress disorder and may involve psychological, emotional, physical, and spiritual distress. Basically, it is the personal struggle to work through thoughts and feelings about an abortion. The ultimate goal is to come to peace with those involved in the decision to end the life of a child.

Reactions to an abortion will vary from person to person…but everyone involved in the decision will be changed by it. As one woman said: "I came to the clinic through the front door. I left through the back door, a different person."

Symptoms of post-abortion syndrome will vary, and those affected by abortion will not possess all signs of the disorder. In fact, some symptoms may not surface until five to 20 years following an abortion. If you find that you experience between five and seven of the following emotions following a decision to abort, you might consider seeking help from a pastor or trained counselor.

Symptoms of Post Abortion Stress

  • Guilt
  • Numbness
  • Emotionally cold and unresponsive
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Suicidal impulses
  • Alcohol and/or drug use
  • Nightmares
  • Eating disorders
  • Anxiety over fertility and childbearing issues
  • Loss of interest in sex OR promiscuity
  • Avoidance of baby reminders (like baby showers, baby stores, etc.)
  • Control issues
  • Over-protection of living children
  • Pre-occupation with becoming pregnant again
  • Strained relationship with living children
  • Resentment toward those who were involved in the abortion decision
  • "Anniversary" syndrome--an increase in symptoms around the time of the anniversary of the abortion or due date of the child
